Xiaomi introduces its first foldable smartphone

Xiaomi officially launched its first foldable smartphone, Mi MIX FOLD, at the Spring 2021 product launch event that previously saw the announcement of the Mi 11 Lite, Mi 11i, Mi 11 Pro, and Mi 11 Ultra smartphones.

The device consists of a large 8.01-inch WQHD + flexible indoor OLED screen with a 4: 3 aspect ratio, 60 Hz refresh rate, 120 Hz touch sampling rate, 900 nits peak brightness, supports HDR10 + and Dolby Vision; It folds inward to make way for a 6.5-inch outdoor AMOLED screen with a refresh rate of 90Hz, a touch sampling rate of 180Hz, a screen ratio of 27: 9, a resolution of 2520 by 840, and a brightness of 900 nits, to appear. The external and internal screens can, thanks to the company's AI algorithm, double the image resolution from 720p to 1440p, and triples the video resolution, boosting the quality from 480p to 1440p.

Swipe left or right three fingers on the internal screen to enter desktop mode, as the traditional Xiaomi MIUI interface turns into a Windows 10-like interface that contains the Programs menu, Taskbar, Control Center, and applications open in the form of bordered windows that contain the minimize, maximize and close buttons.

Mi MIX FOLD adopts a U-shaped hinge design, up to 27% less weight compared to other foldable devices, and the device has undergone 200,000 bends in the reliability test and up to 1 million bends in maximum reliability tests, and as usual, this high-end Xiaomi device comes with the Snapdragon 888 processor with a frequency of 2.84 GHz and an Adreno 660 graphics processor, with LPDDR5 3200MHz RAM, and a UFS 3.1 internal storage. This phone also has four 1216 super linear speakers Tuned by Harman Kardon that have a large 0.65 mm amplitude and a “1.34 cc-equivalent” sound cavity, evenly distributed on both sides of the device (two on each side) which makes the Mi Mix Fold's sound 40 percent louder compared to the Mi 10 Pro and gives you a true 3D sound experience (according to Xiaomi).

In addition to the distinctive design and robust hardware, the Mi Mix Fold has a liquid lens camera for the first time in a smartphone, and the Xiaomi SURGE C1 image-sensing processing chip which is the result of two years of development and a huge investment from the company of 140 million RMB in Research and Development (R&D). This chip provides high performance while taking up low storage and CPU usage. This enables it to serve an improved 3A algorithm and low-light focus capabilities for more accurate autofocus, auto exposure, and auto white balance that greatly improves image quality.

The liquid lens contains transparent liquid wrapped in a film that can change its shape, just like the lens in the human eye thanks to a high-resolution motor, which allows for 3X optical zoom, up to 30X telephoto, and a focus distance of at least 3 cm, making a single lens works as two lens functions: telephoto lens and macro lens. The fluid in the lens is able to work even in harsh weather conditions ranging from -40 °C to 60 °C.

In addition to that, the device also contains a main 108-megapixel camera with a Samsung HM2 sensor with an f / 1.8 lens aperture that supports autofocus, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera with an f / 2.4 lens aperture, and a selfie camera in the form of a punch hole in the external screen with a resolution of 20 megapixels.

Mi MIX FOLD adopts a new butterfly cooling system, consisting of a steam chamber, bionic graphene, thermal gel, and a multi-layer graphite plate, which distributes the excess heat evenly to cool the entire device, improving the heat dissipation capacity while doing heavy tasks, fast charging, or High-speed downloads using 5G, and comes with Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, a side fingerprint integrated with the power button, and runs on MIUI 12 interface based on Android 10.

This phone has a built-in 5020mAh battery consisting of two small batteries with a capacity of 2460mAh and 2560mAh, which allows the battery to charge at speeds of up to 67W, capable of fully charging the phone in a time not exceeding 37 minutes (according to Xiaomi), and it is available in two versions: a regular black version with the fifth-generation Corning Gorilla Glass back with a ceramic feel, and a ceramic special edition with a medium gold frame and volume buttons, in addition to a black ceramic back with a special laser engraving, priced at RMB 9,999 (€1300) for the 12 GB+256 GB model, RMB 10,999 (€1430) for the 12 GB+512 GB configuration, and RMB 12,999 (€1690)for the 16 GB+512 GB version.
