Microsoft has announced the general availability of a new feature update for Windows 10, the May 2021 update, as known as version 21H1, and once again, the company chose to make this update small with only a few new features, and send it to users with the servicing technology like that used for the monthly update process via Windows Updates or in the earlier feature update version 20H2.
This update holds only three new features that are unlikely to have any added benefit for the normal users, and they are:
- Windows Hello multi camera support to set the default as the external camera when both external and internal Windows Hello cameras are present.
- Windows Defender Application Guard performance improvements including optimizing document opening scenario times.
- Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Group Policy Service (GPSVC) updating performance improvement to support remote work scenarios.
These features are mainly aimed at improving the remote work experience for users, and this is a good thing, especially in the circumstances of this pandemic that is still invading several regions in the world now, and this may explain why Microsoft postponed all the other features that were developed for this version, it's because it does not want to disturb Users who spend most of their time working remotely on their computer with a huge update that may take several hours to download and install, especially since Windows 10 still suffering from the problem of installing updates that takes a long, and the company preferred to give them a small update similar to the security updates that it issues every Month.
Despite all of that, this update still brings a lot of bug fixes for many basic system components like Windows kernel, File Explorer, Internet Explorer, Search Experience, and more, so it will be helpful for your computer to install this update as soon it becomes available to you.
Microsoft will provide the May 2021 update to a small number of devices at the beginning, then this update will be available to more users in the coming weeks, while users who have devices that are not fully compatible with the 21H1 update will have to wait longer to get it, and you can now check whether the update is available for your device by going to the settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and clicking on Download and Install this update as shown in this picture.
